How to create the BEST book trailer, EVER. (seriously.)

Team Lulu Blog Header

Book trailers. You’ve seen ‘em and thought to yourself, “I could do that.” Perhaps you thought “I could do that better!” I’m here to tell you how!

  • First, write a book. This is the most difficult part of creating a book trailer. Once you’ve got that down, you are almost finished.
  • Publish your book on This is imperative and will ensure that your book trailer will better than everyone else’s.
  • Be creative. Some book trailers have narrators explaining what the book is about, some book trailers are just words on the screen describing the book. I say make it interesting. You are obviously a creative person, you wrote a book! Use your imagination. Try asking some friends to act out an important scene in your book or maybe explain why people should buy your book using interpretive dance. What ever you do, be creative.

Avoid the book trailer pitfalls of despair:

  • Don’t do a book reading via webcam! The sound is awful, the picture is terrible and image is stagnant. You will surely put your potential fans to sleep.
  • Make sure you have good lighting! This is so important, as video cameras don’t show contrast as well as film.
  • Sound is incredibly important! People can tolerate a bad picture more then they can stomach a loud annoying hum sound or low inaudible talking. You also want to make sure the volume of your trailer isn’t too high or too low.
  • Don’t use copyrighted images, video or music! There are lots of music, video and images available on the web that you can use, but avoid the stuff that is copyrighted.
  • And the best thing you can do is keep it short! You don’t want to bore your legions of fans to sleep, you want them to get out their credit card and order your book!

Great gobbily-gook! You took my advice and made the BEST book trailer. You are well on your way to fame, fortune and the cover of People magazine. But wait! These next tips are vital for getting the most exposure possible for your book trailer.

  • Put a link to your storefront or book in the trailer AND in the video’s description box. This is very important because people can’t copy and paste a link from the video, but they can from the video description. Be sure to include your name and the title of your book in the description as well. You want search engines to direct people to your video, right?
  • Put your video EVERYWHERE! Seriously! There are so many video sites, it’s silly to limit yourself to YouTube. The more sites hosting your book trailer, the better your sales.
  • Make your book trailer work for YOU! Post links on your blog, on your friend’s blog, in forums, everywhere you can! You are a published author, shout about it!

Congratulations! Now you can sleep at night knowing the world is watching your book trailer AND shelving out cash to read your book!

  1. Guys, you have a mistake above. Where it says, “For help creating your book trailer with Window Media Player” you actually mean Windows Movie Maker.

  2. It’s a great idea to U tube your book, but most first timers don’t have the extra cash to do this.
After publishing on Lulu how can one get publicity free? How can one get more hits…? which I presume means more sales.
For overseas writers (who can’t pay in USD), what are the steps one can take. Will publishing on Lulu ensure sales?

Hey Todd Fonseca, superb job at your book trailer for the “Time Cavern.” It was fantastic. It really had me intrigued. I am author on Lulu as well. I may only be 13, but I can write.

  5. Hey Delaney Glass! Thanks for the response. Good luck on lulu – let me know what your book is – I’ll take a look.
Also, I’d appreciate any feedback on the website (doing a lot of updates – I’ll be adding some games soon and looking to see what people like/enjoy (or don’t for that matter)! And if you like the book, I’d appreciate a review on Amazon – tell your friends!

  6. Jeff and Janeen,
Hey guys, thanks for watching and the comments. Jeff, I tried to view your trailer, but it wasn’t there on you tube. Let me know when it’s back up.
Also, I’m working on adding a Timecavern webquest game to my site. It should be ready by Monday. If anyone get’s a chance – take a look at and click the radio button to play the game. Let me know what you think!

  7. Sorry to be pedantic, but as a wordsmith couldn’t resist pointing out that it’s gobbledegook not gobbily gook.
Apart from that, thank you – great advice!

  13. I love the blog Carol! I think Book Trailers are the future of promotions. I totally agree with “Put your video EVERYWHERE! Seriously!” I think making the video under two minutes as if it were a movie preview. I used AVS Media Editor to edit my Book Trailer. You can import video, still photos, and audio.
With that said checkout my Book Trailer for Gray Collar Crimes. Rocks!!

  14. Would Lulu be considering publishing books from other parts of the world?
India, for instance. It is the second largest English book market in the world! Check it out.
Because it is cheaper to publish in India, Lulu books would be cheaper and therefore, more competitive thru the world.

  20. I spent hours watching book trailers and I came to the condlusion that there are a lot of BAD book trailers out there! There is one thing that I would like to point out.
If you choose poor actors to portray your characters you can end up alienating a potential reader.
At first my sister and I decided to forgo the book trailer, but we delved into making a music video based on the book and its characters. It was very important that we chose people that in our mind fit the image of our character. I think for the most part we did pretty good.
When we told our publisher about the music video they were pretty persuasive about having a book trailer done as well.
We spent a lot of money to hire professionals and use professional equipment. I believe that is evident in the final product.
