Market Your Prose Like the Pros with the New Discount Manager

Team Lulu Blog Header

This week we released a powerful new tool to help authors sell more books in their most profitable sales channel —   The new Discount Manager gives you the ability to set discounts on your books across our site, either in the publishing wizard or directly from the “My Lulu” dashboard.

With this tool (learn more about it here) you set your book’s list price as you always have and then set a discount to that list price to be shown alongside the list price.  This is a powerful combination employed by marketers in all kinds of industries to successfully attract buyers.

The feature opens a world of creative marketing opportunities — you can create event-based or seasonal campaigns, for instance, or quickly change pricing to compete with mainstream or independent titles. The key is, you are always in control and can adjust discounts as much and as often as you want.

We developed this tool for you and because of you. You told us that you needed this flexibility to maximize your marketing efforts and reach more buyers.

That’s the goal of authors around the world. Technology is making it ever easier to publish. But getting readers to take notice — and buy — the work you’ve worked so hard to create remains a significant challenge.

Helping authors sell more books is the highest priority here at Lulu. It’s the reason we created the Discount Manager and why, a few weeks back, we updated our eBook tool to distribute eBooks to all versions of Apple’s iBookstore and all devices that we will support in the future.

Already this strategy is paying dividends.   The first week our updated eBook tool was available our authors sold nearly three times as many eBooks as they did the previous week.   The next week, total sales nearly doubled again. That translates into thousands of dollars in additional revenue for Lulu authors — a trend that is continuing.

Even so, we’re not satisfied. The Discount Manager, updated eBook Wizard and all the other tools we’ve created provide a strong foundation for author success.

Stay tuned for more exciting Lulu features to help you sell more books coming soon.

You won’t be disappointed!

  1. I’ve been waiting for this for almost a year. It would be nice to be more flexible such as specifying exact dollar amounts (e.g. $2 off) or a more precise percentage via an input field. Multi-item discounts would be neat too (e.g. buy 2, save $1). It’s a good first start though and I’ll make use of this on Black Friday (Nov 26).

  2. Thank you for the new tool. Is it possible to set DISCOUNT COUPONS as well? I’d love to have this option to give discount to selected customers, like the ones from my mailing list, or the blogs where my book is reviewed.

  3. This is one marketing tool that will surely make a great positive impression on the marketing effort and rate of conversion for authors. It is a welcome development.
However, I agree with Nick Smith in his suggestions for further adjustments and flexibility in price discounts.
    thank you

    Dear Sir/Lady:
I would like to sell by discount but I am afraid that it would change the time of paying revenues and do not know how to use this tool.
Would you kindly write and inform me about this?.

  5. This is a fabulous tool to help promote and catch thifty book readers. I know not only will I be using this tool to promote my own books I hope other will use this tool so I can save on buying books from them!

  6. I have just closed my store Jacob Mango Upstairs Boutique in Carlsbad, California. I sold books and clothing I designed called Jacob Mango with my poetry on it. My trilogy is too expensive and I sold one book for $40. Everybody loves my writing but I am trying to minimize to the price. This is a good idea. Good job Lulu

  7. This is a great tool because it allows us to finally get around the ISBN markup — now a book with an ISBN can be sold for the same price on Lulu as one without. But I would like to make sure that coupon codes work with this built-in discount. Usually Lulu offers can’t be combined, but I’m hoping this is different.

  8. Vivienne,
I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with adding a discount to your second book. Can you tell me the content id for the book?

  9. Thank you, Lulu! I am a bit slow on the uptake on this, but I realized this twelfth month is a great time to use your new tool! I just put a 10% discount on all three of my Lulu books for the month of December through the Solstice. I have called it my Twelfth Month Sale!! See my blog about it! ( It’s a delightfully fun easy practical tool, and looks so professional! It will always be a lovely way to celebrate things. So… Knock wood that I get some sales! Cheers from this Seattle author, Bernadette Joolen.=)
