2018 Tax Announcement

Team Lulu Blog Header

Hey everyone!

I know the holidays are around the corner and the last thing you want to think about right now is tax season but…
I just want to give a quick reminder to everyone that tax season, no matter how much we might want it never to come, will inevitably roll around.

If you’ve earned money from book sales in 2017 (which is awesome by the way!) you may receive a 1099 (in the US) or a 1042 (non-US) from Lulu in early 2018. Not all revenue earned is taxable so not everyone will receive a form.

We have to prepare and send these forms by January 31st for 1099s and March 31st for 1042s, so we’re working on preparing them even now!

Sending out these necessary tax forms means we have to have your most up to date and accurate address on file. Every year, we get thousands of these forms back to us. It costs a lot in stamps and potentially makes it harder for you to do your taxes!

So, we’re asking all of our users to log in and check their Payment Contact (found on the left sidebar of your My Projects page) and update the information if needed.

If you’ve filed a W-9 or W-8BEN to adjust your withholding, you’ll need to resubmit the form. You’ll find links to do this on your Payment Contact’s edit page as well.

Here’s a couple of screen grabs with more detailed instructions:

1. Finding your Payment Contact

Find Payment Contacts

2. Editing your Payment Contact

  1. I published from a number of Email accounts as my computer kept crashing. How can I get all my books in one place?

  2. Hi John,
I don’t believe we can move a project from one account to another, but you recreate your books in a single account to get them more organized.

An outstanding share! I have just forwarded this
onto a colleague who has been conducting a little homework
on this. And he actually ordered me breakfast
because I found it for him… lol. So let me reword this….
Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending time to discuss this issue here
    on your internet site.

Hi, I live in Cotonou, Benin Republic, West Africa, if I decide to self publish my e Book with LuLu publishing what level of tax would be applied to my royalties.

    1. Hi Ian,
It would depend on where the books are shipped too (or in this case with an ebook, downloaded). This article covers some specifics – https://connect.lulu.com/en/discussion/33384/
I always recommend getting a W-9 or W-8BEN on file with our accounting team as well. That will give you more control over the taxes taken from revenue earned. And of course, it’s best to speak with a local tax expert whenever possible.
