Don’t Wait, Do Good Today

Here at Lulu, we live by principles of doing good, both for our local and global community. But it’s easy to just say “we should do good” and harder to actually go out into the world and do some good.

Luckily, numerous individuals and organizations are out there helping us (and you!) find ways to volunteer, participate, and generally be active in our communities.

At Lulu, we’ve got a policy in place that grants every employee some paid days off each year to spend time volunteering. And we’re always sure to put that policy to good use, often in small groups of 10 or 15 people going out into our community. From working in local community gardens to helping Habitat for Humanity build homes, Lulu employees love to volunteer.

Here are a few of our favorite pics from the last two years of Lulu volunteerism to help inspire you!

This summer, while you’re hiking, vacationing, digging into your reading list, or doing any of the amazing summer activities we all love, take some time to do something for your community. Volunteer and give back to show how much you appreciate your community and neighbors.

Activate Good

In the Triangle area of North Carolina (where Lulu is located), Activate Good is our preferred resource for finding volunteer opportunities.

Activate Good serves the community by partnering with local organizations and communicating their volunteer needs to the public. Activate Good’s website makes it easy to find opportunities. You can use their website to find opportunities by cause, by keywords, or by location.

Getting Global

Okay, we’re well aware that many of you do not live in the Triangle area, NC.

That shouldn’t stop you from volunteering and doing good in your community, wherever that might be!

If you’re out there reading this, thinking to yourself “I do want to do good!” then let us suggest a few resources.

Well funded and long-standing, Points of Light connects motivated individuals with volunteer organizations all over the world. No matter where you are, Points of Light offers a ton of ways to connect with volunteer opportunities.

We also recommend VolunteerMatch, a network of volunteer opportunities and nonprofits based in the U.S. One thing that’s unique about VolunteerMatch is that you can search for local (in person) or virtual volunteer opportunities. Plus, you can filter your search by age or group size.

Last, there’s Idealist, an organization that aims to connect idealists around the world. They not only have volunteer opportunities but also have internships and job listings.

There are many more organizations that can match you to an opportunity that’s perfect for you, check out this List of Volunteering Websites.

That’s not all either, we’ve got a few ideas you can kick off all on your own or with your friends and family.

Volunteer Ideas

If you are motivated to do your own volunteering and don’t even need organizations to help you find opportunities, we’ve got a few ideas to help get you started. And if you want a really comprehensive list of ideas, check out this list of 145+ Community Service Ideas from Fundly.

Here are a few ideas we particularly love:

  • Clean up your local park
  • Volunteer at the local library
  • Teach classes at your community center for a skill you have
  • Organize a food or clothing drive
  • Coach a youth sports team
  • Donate old or used books
  • Teach a child to read
  • Adopt or clean up a stretch of highway
  • Volunteer at an animal shelter
  • Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity
  • Start a community garden

With summer literally around the corner (tomorrow), we hope you have lots of fun adventures planned. But also that you find time to do something positive for the community, whether it incorporates an idea from this blog or something unique you think up yourself!

We’d love to hear how you’re doing good in your community this summer. Post in the comments how you’re volunteering!
