It’s not easy to remember the past and simultaneously look to the future and remain grounded in the present.
September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance does just that. It’s a day for community members to come together across the United States to honor victims, survivors, and responders from the September 11, 2001 attacks through community service.

A Forward-Looking Tribute
Team Lulu participated in Activate Good’s 9/11 Day of Service. Activate Good is a nonprofit that connects volunteers with charitable organizations throughout the Triangle region of North Carolina. They help people channel their passions into doing good and giving back.
On September 11th, Lulu joined Activate Good’s service day that attracted an estimated 2,000 – 2,500 volunteers. Our team worked alongside local businesses and community volunteers, including a gaggle of middle schoolers, to create WAKE Up and Read literacy activity rings sponsored by Fidelity Investments. We gathered at HQ Capital Club’s Canon Room, a beautiful venue that overlooks the city of Raleigh. Together, we cut and assembled pages to make over 5,000 activity rings for local kids in kindergarten through fifth grade.

WAKE Up and Read was created to address the achievement gap. A study from the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that students that don’t read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma.
The activity books Lulu assembled included fun and easy exercises for kids and their caregivers to promote success in school. The topics included reading, talking, and playing with descriptions in both English and Spanish. No matter what language you speak, childhood literacy is crucial to improving a child’s opportunities for lifelong success.
Loving to Learn with Lulu Junior
At Lulu, we’re passionate about books, but that’s not why we come to work each day. We’re in the business of helping people share their stories regardless of their background, or age! Our authors and readers are pretty spectacular.
We have book-making kits for kids. Our Lulu Junior kits aim to inspire a love of reading and writing in the next generations. The kits include everything a child needs to write and illustrate their very own book. We transform their ideas into professionally printed and bound books. Creating a book requires active participation and promotes literacy skills.
